How to Soundproof Your AC

Air conditioners: can’t live with them, can’t live without them!

As much as they keep us cool during the hottest days of the year, they can also be awfully noisy. From banging and rattling to dripping sounds, your AC can make your quiet home one you want to run from.

Types of AC noise
Window units

  • Rattling or vibration of interior parts
  • Hum of the fan while on regular setting
  • Electronic beeping sounds when adjusting the settings
  • Sloshing water in humid conditions

Ducts and air vents

  • Air noise in vents
  • Pops and bangs in ducts
  • Outdoor unit banging

How to Soundproof
As much as these noises can be a nuisance, there are also ways to avoid them:

Ducts must be covered with closed cell sound absorbing foam, for sound and thermal insulation. As for metal ducts, they should be isolated from the fan shroud with flexible coupling. Window AC units are known to experience some rattling noises, but the matter can be made much worse if not installed properly. Make sure your AC is slightly tilted backwards outside the window and according to manufacturer’s instructions. Also, be sure all the compressor mounting parts are present and are properly tightened.

If the noise is coming from the outside condenser of the central air conditioning unit, call in the pros to resolve the issue. This will require them to open the unit and install a sound blanket for your model. While some homeowners like to take matters into their own hands, we know from experience that these units can be dangerous and are not to be experimented with.
