How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Fall

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

Even though the temperatures haven’t dropped just yet, it’s a good idea to be prepared for when they do. By performing a routine HVAC maintenance, you can catch little problems early on so that you don’t run into bigger problems when you really need the heat at home. Before you get started, here are a few tips to consider:

Replace the filter. If you haven’t changed the filter yet, now is the time to do so! Better yet, try the new high-efficiency pleated filters that can grab even the tiniest particles. It’s also a good reminder to check on the filter every month. And if it looks dirty, it’s best to go ahead and change it.

Clear the vents. Before turning the heat on, you should clear your vents of dust and debris. Because cranking the heat without cleaning them can cause dust, allergens, and bacteria to blow around, causing potential health issues. The best way to clean your vents is to vacuum using the hose.

Check on your alarms and detectors. The fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector in your home are essential devices that keep you safe. So make sure you inspect that they’re working properly and replace the battery if needed. Going through the fall and winter months without doing so can be dangerous and potentially life threatening, so make it a must-do.

Remove debris outside. It’s easy for pollen, leaves, twigs, and other forms of debris to get caught in or around your HVAC system, so it’s a good idea to clear it off. Check the tops and sides of your AC unit and heat pump outside – if there are no obstructions then you’re good to go!

To make sure you have completed your HVAC maintenance this fall, turn to Leslie Heating & Cooling. Our professionals are fully trained and ready to help you get ready for cooler weather!

HVAC Myths Decoded

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

Did you know that closing off your vents won’t actually reduce your air conditioning bill? Contrary to popular belief, this can in fact throw your system out of whack. So not everything you hear about heating and cooling is true. In an attempt to clear things up, below are a few common HVAC myths:

Myth and facts
Myth: Turning the thermostat all the way down will cool a room faster.
Fact: When you set a desired temperature, your air conditioner won’t work any harder or faster to cool off the room just because you press a lower setting repeatedly. The best thing you can do is to turn your thermostat to the right temperature and wait patiently – the room will eventually cool off the way you want it to, just give it a little time.

Myth: Leaving your fan on even when you’re not at home will keep your home cool.
Fact: As much as we’d like this to be true, reality is that fans do not cool off your home. What they actually do is give off a cooling effect that only helps when you’re in the room because it sends a chilling sensation through your body.

Myth: Buying an energy-efficient HVAC unit will save you money.
Fact: This one is actually partially true. Investing in an energy-efficient system can save you money in the long run, but what’s more important is the size of your unit. Make sure you don’t buy one that’s too big, as this can lead to energy waste. Buying one that’s too small can also be inefficient because you’ll be more likely to crank up the temperature, leading the system to overwork itself.

Myth: There’s no need to call a professional unless there’s a problem.
Fact: Like any other big investment in your home, calling an HVAC pro for a routine checkup is an important part of maintaining a well-functioning system. So don’t hold off until the last minute to dial your technician’s number – this can lead to worse problems than you had to begin with.

Heating and Cooling FAQs

Friday, September 11th, 2015

At Leslie Heating & Cooling, we are dedicated to helping you understand what your HVAC system is all about. So here are the answers to a few of the most commonly asked questions we receive:

Faqs
Q: What exactly does HVAC stand for?
A: HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning – and we handle it all!

Q: How long can I expect my system to last?
A: That all depends. Most HVAC systems can last from 10 to 20 years. However, as your system gets older, you might start to notice problems, like leaks and loud noises. These issues are the reason it is so important to keep up with regular maintenance and tune-ups. And when you take necessary precautions, you can save lots of money later on!

Q: What can I expect from a tune-up?
A: When you schedule a tune-up for your air conditioner, you can expect a thorough cleanup. From clearing out debris to cleaning the condenser and evaporator coils, Leslie Heating & Cooling will cover all the bases to ensure that your system works properly for a long time! When it comes to your heating system, we will check your thermostat, the heater, and the combustion within the heater.

Q: How can I save money on my energy bills?
A: Great question! There are a few things you can do to lower the cost of energy. First, make sure your windows are sealed shut so that you keep the hot air out and the cool air in. Also, you can consider using a programmed thermostat, which will lower temperatures when you’re away from home – that way you avoid wasting unnecessary energy.

Energy-Efficient Cooling Tips for Your Air Conditioner

Wednesday, September 9th, 2015

With just a few weeks left of summer, there’s still time to get the best out of your air conditioner. If you’re looking for the most effective ways to stay cool while saving energy, look no further than these tips:

thermostat cost

Set the temperature high. Make sure you set your thermostat at a high temperature during the hot days of September. Truth be told, when there’s a smaller difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures, you can lower the costs of cooling.

Remember cooler is not better. Setting your thermostat to the coldest setting will not cool your home off faster. In fact, cooling off a room takes time. So don’t make the mistake of setting your air conditioner too cold, as this can lead to unnecessary expenses.

Turn on a fan. If you own a window AC unit, consider using a ceiling or tower fan in conjunction with your air conditioner. Doing so will help the cooler air to circulate, spreading the cold air around your room more rapidly and effectively. Plus, you won’t have to use as much energy from your air conditioner!

Turn off appliances. Shutting off appliances that give off excess heat, such as lamps and TVs can save you a great deal of money in the long run. This is because you won’t have to crank your AC has high to fight the heat from these devices.

Buy an energy-efficient model. One of the best ways you can cool off your home while saving energy is to look for an ENERGY STAR labeled air conditioner. These units are 10 percent more efficient, which can save you that much more money on your next utility bill!
