The Secret to Keeping Home Warm This Winter

Monday, December 28th, 2015

Having trouble staying warm in the winter? We’re right there with you! We know that winters can get incredibly frigid in the north, which is why finding the best home heating solutions is so important. In conjunction with your central heating system, there are several remedies that can have you feeling toasty in no time. Below are four smart solutions:

Heat insulation of house
Use a portable heater – Heat up those cool areas in the home by relying on a trusty portable heater. Although portable heaters have a reputation for being fire hazards, if you know the do’s and don’ts of how to use one, it can be extremely reliable during the winter.

Unroll area rugs – Walking around barefoot on tile or hardwood during the winter is one thing we’d all like to avoid, especially when the temperatures drop below freezing. And while installations such as radiant heat might efficiently keep your toes toasty during those cold months of the year, not every home can install them. In this case, your best bet is to lay out more area rugs in the home. Not only does this method guarantee a warmer home, but it’s more cost-effective.

Buy proper window treatments – One of the most obvious ways to keep your home more insulated is by hanging up heavy drapes. But before you go out and buy a set, make sure you have the proper measurements. In other words, you don’t want your drapes hanging too low to the ground, enough to block floor vents and baseboards. So take a few quick measurements before heading to the store.

Invest in zone control systems – Want to heat up that one zone in the home that always gets the most chilly? When you buy a zone control system, you no longer need to worry about feeling uncomfortable (or fighting over the temperature in your home). In fact, every room can be set to a different temperature using one control system.

Air Purifiers on High Demand

Monday, December 21st, 2015

From air pollutants to dust and allergens, the air in your home or workplace might not be as clean as you think! But thanks to new technology, you can filter out all the bad air particles and restore freshness once more. The answer? Air purifiers.

Purifiers have been increasingly more popular over the years due to the change in people’s lifestyles. Below are a few quality purifiers that are currently on the market that you might want to invest in:

air purifiers

Media Filters – Non-electronic and cost-effective, media filters clean the air filtering through your duct system. They work by eliminating particulates from the air that pass through without letting solid objects pass as well – a smart option for any home.

HEPA Air Cleaners – These systems can filtrate up to 95 percent of particles and bioaerosols, getting rid of bacteria and fungus. Although they are typically used in medical and industrial settings, there are home air filters with minimum efficiency reporting value that are just as effective as HEPA filters.

Ultra-Violet Air Purification – UV light technology is another method of killing pollutants in the air. These purifiers work to eliminate bacteria and allergens in your ductwork, just like media filters. When used in conjunction with other air purifiers, this option works best.

At Leslie Heating and Cooling, we also offer professional air cleaning specialties where our air quality specialists will come right to your door and evaluate your home’s needs. To learn more about this offer as well as our other air purifying options, click here.

Warning: Space Heaters Are a Fire Hazard

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

Do you have that one spot in the home that never seems to warm up? If you’re like most people, you probably use a space heater to fix the problem. Although these heating devices are a simple way to heat up the home, they can also be a major fire hazard if you’re not careful. In fact, 32 percent of home heating fires involve space heaters.

Before you put yours to use, consider these safety tips to protect you and your home:

A halogen or electric heater on wooden floor

Monitor them. When you’re curled up at home and the temperature is chilly, feel free to turn on your space heater – just make sure you keep your eyes on it at all times. In other words, shut off the device when you leave the room and be careful that it doesn’t come in contact with any flammable materials.

Do not place close to flammable materials. Space heaters need their own space, meaning you should place them a spot that’s at least a few feet away from flammable materials. This includes furniture, window treatments, and side tables. You should also stay a few feet away too, as space heaters can cause burns or overheat your clothing.

Choose overheat protection. Not only is a convection space heater a smart option, but a device that offers overheat protection is the way to go. That way, if your heater accidentally tips over, it will automatically shut off.

Keep small children away. Children can be curious most of the time, which is why it’s important to keep them away from such devices. Place your space heater in an area that is hard to reach or attend them at all times during use. If a child gets too close to the heater, they could accidentally knock it over or harm themselves.

Investment. Want to boost the value of your home? Make sure you have an efficient heating system! One of the major benefits of an outdoor wood burning furnace is that guaranteed to provide your home with top of the line insulation.

Maintenance. When you choose an outdoor wood furnace, you don’t need to deal with the electrical elements of your average indoor furnace. In turn, this means less required parts and few complications.

Health. Another reason you should consider purchasing this type of furnace is because there’s a less likely chance of carbon monoxide build-up in your home as well as other indoor pollutants. Ultimately, this means you and your family will be safer and free of harmful chemicals.

Longevity. Not only does an outdoor wood furnace offer longer duration of heat, but it can also last longer than the traditional furnace. This is due to its natural functionality – just be sure you inspect periodically, just like any other home system would need.
