New Year’s Resolutions for Your HVAC

Tuesday, December 27th, 2016

The start of a new year is usually brimming with excitement and promises – lose weight, eat healthier, and quit smoking. But it doesn’t have to end there – make sure you show your home some TLC too this year and commit to staying on top of it’s needs. If you’re a homeowner (or your resolution is to become a homeowner) here are a few ways to keep your HVAC system running smoothly.

dirty air conditioner filter and dirty finger

Schedule maintenance. Just like you bring your car in for an inspection every year, you need to do the same with your HVAC system. Routine HVAC maintenance can help,

  • reach peak efficiency: If your system is not working efficiently, it can be driving up your energy bill. A technician may be able to fix any small problems and bring your system to it’s peak performance.

  • identify worn parts: You never want to wait until a pipe is cracked or your system won’t turn on to call a technician. With regular maintenance, a technician may be able to find small problems and patch or repair them before they become a bigger issue.

Change air filters. Dust, pollen and pet dander naturally build up in filters over time and when they’re cleaned out regularly, it can help,

  • extend your HVAC’s life: The most common reason why a system breaks down is because of a clogged filter. A dirty filter can make it hard for air to pass and in the most serious cases can cause the system to overheat.

  • cut energy costs: If air can’t easily pass through the filter, your HVAC has to work harder to force it through, meaning it’s using up more energy and working less efficiently – costing you money.

  • improve air quality: Dirty air filters worsen the air quality in your home by blowing dirt and dust from room to room. If you have allergy sufferers in the house, you should consider having the filters cleaned twice a year instead of just once.

Use natural heat sources. Instead of relying on oil, try taking advantage of more natural heat, like,

  • opening the curtains: Direct sunlight can easily raise the temperature of your house 5 degrees in the winter, so be careful not to block that heat with thick, closed blinds.

  • switching to solar power: By the end of this year, 1 million homes will have switched to solar power. In addition to the money saved on your energy bill, solar power is better for the environment.

  • utilizing your fireplace: If you have one, light a wood burning fireplace instead of raising the heat – but make sure that keep that heat from escaping through the chimney by buying a balloon.

Switch to a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats let you customize a schedule of when the heat comes up throughout the day, based on your family’s routine. With a programmable thermostat, you’ll,

  • have a set a schedule: If you work regular hours during the day, you can set the thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature when you leave or before you return home.

  • save energy: A pre–set schedule will lower your home’s temperature during the day when it is unoccupied, keeping it at a more energy efficient temperature.

  • have peace of mind: Now there will be no more forgetting to turn the thermostat down before bed, or calling someone at the house and asking them to turn the heat on for company coming over.

Natural Ways to Heat Up Your Home

Wednesday, December 14th, 2016

When temperatures are below freezing, odds are you’re going to blast the heat. But blasting the heat can have consequences – not only can it waste energy, but it can also cause your system to overwork and wear down over time.

While reaching for the thermostat sounds like the best solution, we know a few other ways that can warm you up and save you money so you won’t think about cranking the heat again.

Wear layers
The most cost-effective and purposeful way to warm up naturally is to wear layers upon layers. Sometimes it’s a simple solution we don’t think about, but by dressing warmer, we don’t need as much electric or gas heat to warm up our homes.

Open the shades
When sunny winter days are upon us, let’s open the shades and let the light in. When natural sunlight reflects through our windows, we can leave the heat for more cloudy, snowy nights.

Reverse the fan
By reversing the fan to rotate in a clockwise direction, we can push the warm air down in order to fight the heat which rises.

Sleep with a hot water bottle
Place a hot water bottle under the covers with you at night to allow heat to radiate through your body. With this direct source of natural heat, you’re less likely to blast the heat at night when you go to bed. Just be careful that the water you use isn’t too hot or doesn’t come in direct contact with your skin.

Take a hot shower
Just the way a cold shower can cool you down, a hot shower can have the opposite effect. Take a hot shower upon waking up and going to sleep when you might feel more tempted to reach for the thermostat. By taking a hot shower, you can shake off that chill without wasting energy.

5 Secrets to Keeping Warm This Holiday

Friday, December 9th, 2016

The holidays are a happy time of year, but they can also be frigid. When it’s time to have everyone gathered together in your home, the last thing you want is a cold home. With a few tips from professional HVAC technicians, you can keep your home warm without spending a fortune on heating:

Lay out the area rugs
Many of us have wood floors in our homes, which is why area rugs can come in handy. When the weather gets cold, it’s time to layer on the rugs, overlapping a larger area rug with a slightly smaller one for more insulation.

Redo weatherstripping
Weatherstripping ensures that cool air stays out and air leaks don’t occur. If your home is feeling drafty, it might be time to re-do weatherstripping around all your windows. To determine where you need it the most, go around the home with a tea light candle. If the handle flickers or goes out near one area of your window, weatherstripping is likely necessary.

Hang heavy shades
Swap out your lightweight window treatments for heavy shades instead. Whether thermal or a dark color, certain shades are better for winter than others.

Use a portable heater
When used safely, portable heaters are a great source of heat for those cool spots in your home. Whether you’re lounging at home or having a family gathering, portable heaters can keep you toasty.

Use the fireplace
Have a wood-burning fireplace at home? Not only will this keep your warm, but it will also save you money on your energy bill. Using your fireplace is a natural resource for heating and should be used to warm up your home carefully.
