What’s Wrong With My Air Conditioner?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2020

With these skyrocketing summer temperatures, your air conditioner will continually be running to fight the heat. Sometimes, however, it might not be working well enough.

Is something mechanically wrong with it, or is your unit just old and inefficient?

Today, we’re going to break down some of the reasons that your air conditioner breaks down on you when you need it the most. (more…)

Is Your AC Up to Date? Here’s Why It Might Be Time to Consider an Upgrade

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020

Sometimes, the air conditioning system you’ve had since you moved in just isn’t cutting it anymore. While it may be tempting to run your current system into the ground before even thinking about a replacement, the benefits of replacing it sooner far outweigh the positives of procrastination. Today, we’ve highlighted some of the big reasons you should upgrade your AC system before summer hits in full force.

It’s Old

The age of an air conditioner greatly impacts its functionality and efficiency. Our experts recommend that you get a new system every 10 or so years. If you hold out longer than that, the likelihood of needing our air conditioning repair service in Woodridge to show up and fix it will significantly increase. If your system is up there in age, it might be time to pull the plug and consider replacing it entirely.

It Keeps Breaking

Regardless of its age, if your system keeps breaking, it is probably time to consider a replacement. The cost of continually repairing your system adds up fast, and the latest models of air conditioning units will last longer and perform more efficiently. This means that you’ll spend more upfront on the brand new system, but pay a lot less on repairs and maintenance in the long term. (more…)

Window Units Vs. Central Air: Which is Best For You?

Friday, July 29th, 2016

It’s the first heat wave of the summer and you’re quickly realizing you can’t make it one more season without installing some type of air conditioning. But should you go with central air or individual units? There are definitely pro’s and con’s to each choice, so take a minute to read over the benefits of both.

http://www.leslieheatingandcooling.com/blog/window-units-vs-central-air-which-is-best-for-you/

Cost:

In general, individual window units are much cheaper than a central air system and can be installed by just about anyone.

If you’re looking to cool down an entire house, buying a wall unit for each room can quickly add up, so you may want to think about central air. The cost of the unit and installation will be higher, but if you’re planning to stay in that house for 15+ years, it will give you a better return on your investment.

Maintenance:

Wall units are quick and easy to install and fit in almost any window. The filter needs to be cleaned about once every season, but takes just a few minutes and can be done yourself. Every few years small pieces within the unit may wear and need to be replaced, but they are typically pretty inexpensive as well.

Central air is much harder to install, so if you don’t have a background in construction, We would advise against hooking it up yourself. The last thing you want is to realize halfway through the job that all the holes were made in the wrong spot. But after a professional installation there is little maintenance, other than the occasional vent cleaning.

Efficiency:

Wall units will easily cool down a bedroom, or studio apartment, but they probably won’t keep an entire floor cool. They also don’t combat humidity as well as central air, but you do have the option to also buy an inexpensive dehumidifier.

Central air runs a bit more efficiently than window units, mostly because they can be hooked up to programmable thermostats which automatically adjust the temperature throughout the day. They are also better at getting rid of humidity in the air, making you feel even cooler.

7 Ways to Cool Down on a Budget

Tuesday, June 21st, 2016

Let’s face it: owning an air conditioner isn’t cheap. And during the dog days of summer, the prices only get worse. That is, unless you know how to stay energy-efficient. As your Chicagoland area HVAC specialists, we’d like to share 7 tips for cooling down and sticking to a budget:

natural ways to cool your home
1. Plant more trees – Planting more greens around your home can stop the sun from shining inside your home and heating things up (causing you to crank the AC in the summer).

2. Install solar screens – Did you know that solar or mesh-like window screens can block up to 70 percent of solar energy before it enters your home? Install them on the west side of your home where sunlight hits the strongest during the day.

3. Circulate the fan – Keep the fan going inside your home and use in conjunction with your air conditioning. But instead of blowing the fan in your exact direction, leave it close to your AC unit to push the air from your unit across the room.

4. Regulate the thermostat – It may sound simple, but it’s easy to forget – lower your air conditioner’s thermostat setting to 78 degrees when you’re at home and raise it higher at night and when you’re away. By making this adjustment, you can save 5 to 15 percent on your cooling bills.

5. Cozy up in the basement – When the hot air rises, your basement is the number one spot to stay cool. So if you have a finished basement, take advantage by spending more time down there. Use it as an extra, cozy living space to keep cool during those hot, humid summer days.

6. Have a cookout – Summer is all about the great taste of BBQs. But barbeques don’t only taste delicious, they can save you energy as well. Think about how much heat you generate by using the stove and oven in your kitchen, and how much air conditioning you use to counteract the heat. Now imagine how much energy you can save by cooking outdoors instead!

7. Maintain your system – Scheduling a tune-up, changing a dirty filter, and fixing repairs is all a part of maintaining a well-functioning HVAC system. Without doing what it takes to allow good air movement, you can boost your cooling budget and make your AC work even harder, which often leads to less efficiency.

Life Before Air Conditioning

Thursday, June 16th, 2016

The air conditioner could be considered one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. It completely revolutionized the way people do summer. Some may say things were better before its invention, but one can’t argue the impact the AC has had on our lives. Let’s leap into the past and see how life went on without condensers, compressors and evaporators.

life before air conditioning

Porches
The porch was vital to any home in the early 1900’s. Not only did it shade your windows from letting in sunlight but it was a social place for neighborhood families. In those days, indoor and outdoor temperatures were around the same but it was less stuffy on the porch. When families would finish supper, they would all go out on the porch for a little relief from the heat. This led to entire neighborhoods communicating in a way that seems lost on us today.

Home Structure
Have you ever been inside of a church and wondered why the ceilings are so high? The earliest buildings, like churches, were built with high ceilings so that the heat would rise to the top and leave the cooler air down below. When suburbs started emerging, all the homes were built with these high ceilings for the same reason. Air conditioning was not made affordable until the mid 1960’s, so buyers with the income to be choosy only looked for homes with this feature.

Sleeping Outdoors
Getting all sticky before you go to bed is one of the worst feeling ever. To avoid this in the days before air conditioning, they would sleep outside. When they got tired of getting eaten alive by bugs, the screened in porches started emerging.

The Movies
Movie theaters owe a lot of their early success to the air conditioner. The theatres were the only places that could afford the A/C and this had flocks of people migrating into their doors over the summer. We release our big movies around Christmas but theirs were always in the middle of the summer heat.

Change is a funny thing and whether it is better or worse is irrelevant because it is unavoidable. Today it would be difficult to find a home without an air conditioner, obviously a big change from the way things used to be, so get with the times.

Are AC Maintenance Plans Worth It?

Tuesday, June 7th, 2016

AC Maintenance Plans: a waste of money or an investment?

If you’re installing a new HVAC system or repairing an old one, you might want to ask your HVAC contractor about their maintenance plans. You might be on the fence about it, not realizing the major benefits of such an agreement. Don’t worry – we’re here to clear things up:

AC Maintennace Plan

Protect Your Investment
Some AC maintenance plans put service into writing to help protect your investment. This means you’re guaranteed the best warranties, protected from costly breakdowns and defects, and guaranteed proper installation.

Exclusive Discounts
If your HVAC system starts acting up, you can count on maintenance plans to help you save money. When you sign up for such plans, you will often receive a service and repair discount, which means more money can go towards purchasing a new system if needed.

Less Fees
Aside from discounts, you can also benefit from less fees and charges. For example, Leslie Heating and Cooling offers a Family Plan that saves you from trip fees and surprise expenses. We call this our “no dispatch fee and overtime charge agreement”.

Emergency Service
When you join a maintenance plan, you become an even higher priority, which means 24-hour emergency service, no questions asked.

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner. If you’re kicking off the summer with an outdoor party, here are a few tips to make sure your gathering goes perfectly:

memorial day party

Arrange Seating
If sun is in the forecast, prepare for lots of outdoor seating. If you don’t have enough outdoor seating, move some of your indoor seating outside. Set up a few extra table to make eating easier.

Create a Menu
Whether you’re planning a cookout or would rather arrange potluck, let guests know what kind of mouthwatering meal they can expect this weekend! Sometimes the easiest way to serve a large crowd is to set up buffet-style by setting up a long table of utensils, food, and drinks.

Decorate
Think red, white, and blue! From garland to american flags and flowers, there are plenty of ways to show your patriotism on Memorial Day. An arrangement of red and white carnations with an American flag makes for a great table centerpiece.

Get an AC Maintenance
If you’re taking your party indoors, be sure to check on your AC before the weekend. The last thing you want is for your air conditioner to break down when your guests are feeling warm.

At Leslie Heating and Cooling, we offer AC maintenance and repairs to prepare you for summer weather. Becoming More Energy Conscious

Tuesday, May 10th, 2016

A green home is a happy home! Whether it’s saving money or saving energy, knowing that you’re making a difference for your finances and in the community is a major reason many homeowners are learning what it means to be energy conscious.

Saving energy and money comes with even the smallest efforts. We encourage you to consider these conservation tips for a healthier lifestyle and environment:

saving energy at home

  1. Install a programmable thermostat to control the heating and cooling in all areas of your home whether you’re home or not.
  2. Only turn the dishwasher on once it’s fully loaded and consider air drying your dishes instead of leaving them in for a drying cycle.
  3. Unplug home electronics when you know you’ll be away for a while. This includes your laptops, lamps, TVs, DVD players, radio clocks, and appliances.
  4. Take shorter showers (or better yet, baths) and opt for a low-flow showerhead.
  5. Swap out your incandescent bulbs for LED lights instead.
  6. If you’re making a quick stop at a local store this summer, consider riding your bike or walking instead of taking the car.
  7. Look for an energy efficient HVAC unit to save energy and money during both the coldest and hottest seasons of the year.

Getting Your AC Ready for Summer

Monday, April 18th, 2016

Your air conditioning is one of the most fundamental systems in your home, especially during summer. To avoid a malfunctioning AC when the temperatures outside are at their hottest, here are a few ways to prepare:

programmable thermostat

Change the filter
Changing the filter is essential. By replacing your filter, you keep your air conditioning running smoothly. If you have a forced air system, locate the filter behind the metal panel on the front of the blower unit. Unscrew the pannel and replace. For window units, you should find the filter on the face of the unit behind the metal panel. Should your unit come with a permanent filter, gently remove and clean with some white vinegar and water. Allow it to air dry before putting back into place.

Clean the outdoor unit coils
Over the winter, your outdoor unit becomes susceptible to lots of dust, debris, and mud. Inevitably, all that debris can clog up your unit and prevent it from functioning properly. So disconnect the power and spray the outside unit with a garden hose.

Install a programmable thermostat
Did you know that with programmable thermostats, you can set the your system to automatically adjust the temperature when you leave or before you return home – a convenient way to save energy and know that your home will be comfortable the moment you arrive.

At Leslie Heating and Cooling, we are a family-owned and operated business based in Woodridge, Illinois and are dedicated to helping you get your HVAC up and running for summer! We also offer air filters and fresh air ventilation systems to maximize your home’s comfort. To learn more about these solutions, give us a call at 630.621.9419 or visit our website.
