Thursday, July 14th, 2016

Cranking the AC isn’t the only way to stay cool this summer. With a few inexpensive gadgets and a little strategic planning, you can feel cool all summer long and save your energy bill in the process. You can check out the entire list of suggestions here, or look at our top picks below.

Seal air leaks and drafts around windows and door frames. Spending just a little on new caulking can go a long way with your energy bill.

Keep drapes closed during the day to block the sun, then open them at night to expel any lingering indoor heat.

Install heat-reflecting films to your blinds or shades and keep your house even cooler, all while reducing glare.

Avoid using hot appliances, like dryers, ovens and stove tops. Instead, embrace the great outdoors this season by barbecuing more often and hanging your clothes outside to dry.

Run ceiling fans the right way. Set your fans to rotate counterclockwise to make everyone in the room feel an estimated 4 degrees cooler.

Use attic fans to suck hot air out of the top of your house and pull cool air in from outdoors.

Choose cotton T-shirts, dresses, tank tops and bed sheets. Cotton is one of the most breathable and cooling fabrics, so incorporate it into your everyday wear as often as possible.

Maintain your AC units by cleaning and changing the filter regularly. Clogged filters make your unit work harder than it needs to and drive up energy costs.

Attach window awnings above South and West facing windows to cut your home’s solar heat gain by more than 60%.

Program your thermostat a few degrees higher during times when no one is home. It saves you the hassle of always adjusting the thermostat and keeps your AC running efficiently.

How to Throw the Perfect Memorial Day Party

Tuesday, May 24th, 2016

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner. If you’re kicking off the summer with an outdoor party, here are a few tips to make sure your gathering goes perfectly:

memorial day party

Arrange Seating
If sun is in the forecast, prepare for lots of outdoor seating. If you don’t have enough outdoor seating, move some of your indoor seating outside. Set up a few extra table to make eating easier.

Create a Menu
Whether you’re planning a cookout or would rather arrange potluck, let guests know what kind of mouthwatering meal they can expect this weekend! Sometimes the easiest way to serve a large crowd is to set up buffet-style by setting up a long table of utensils, food, and drinks.

Decorate
Think red, white, and blue! From garland to american flags and flowers, there are plenty of ways to show your patriotism on Memorial Day. An arrangement of red and white carnations with an American flag makes for a great table centerpiece.

Get an AC Maintenance
If you’re taking your party indoors, be sure to check on your AC before the weekend. The last thing you want is for your air conditioner to break down when your guests are feeling warm.

At Leslie Heating and Cooling, we offer AC maintenance and repairs to prepare you for summer weather. For 25 years we have been providing trusted customer service to clients throughout the Chicagoland area. Tips for Buying a New Air Conditioner

Monday, March 28th, 2016

Picture this: it’s the first hot day of the year and your AC isn’t cooling you down. “Is it broken?”, you ask.

Without a working AC, you waste energy using every fan in your home but it’s not enough to cool you down. Don’t you wish you bought that new air conditioner sooner? Don’t wait – make buying a new air conditioner on your to-do list this spring. But before you go shopping, here are a few tips to consider:

Buying a new air conditioner
Location
What’s your climate like? If it rains and snows often during the year, opt for a weather-resistant outdoor unit. For example, split air conditioner units are built to endure such harsh weather conditions with zero problems.

Efficiency
When it comes to large investments, like an air conditioner, choose dual zones. Single zone split air conditioners might not be enough to cool off multiple rooms. On the other hand, dual zones have two air handlers and are ideal for cooling several areas in your home.

DIY or Hire
Installing a window AC unit is easy, but installing a split air conditioner is more complex. And if not installed properly, you can run into hazards and costly repairs down the line. So unless you have HVAC knowledge and all the proper tools, consider hiring a professional HVAC service to get the job done right.

At Leslie Heating and Cooling, we are dedicated to helping you create a comfortable environment in your home. That is why we offer energy efficient upgrades to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. How Zone Control Systems Work

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

Unless you live on your own, chances are you’ve had an argument about the temperature in your home at one point or another. If you find yourself constantly adjusting the temperature throughout your home in an attempt to heat or cool only one area, then a zone control system might be the solution for you.

What is a zone control?
Zone control systems allow you to individually set different temperatures throughout your home to help increase efficiency when heating or cooling.

What are the benefits?

Forced Air Zone Control
By setting up a forced air zone control system, you can heat or cool each room using a separate thermostat. In other words, each thermostat is wired to its own zone so that you no longer need to settle on a single temperature for your entire home.

Hydronic Zone Controls
A hydronic zone control system allows you to get the most out of your boiler system and heat your home on a room to room basis. You have a control panel and a thermostat for each zone so that your boiler doesn’t have to overwork itself to create unneeded heat.

When it comes to zone control systems, the greatest benefit of all is that everyone can choose the temperature they want in different areas of the home.
