Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Furnace

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

Frigid temperatures are upon us – don’t let your furnace break down when you least expect it. Below are a few of the most common telltale signs that it might be time to replace your furnace:

furnace replacement

Old age.
The average lifespan of a furnace is 15 to 20 years, depending on the quality of your brand. So if you know your furnace is close to its end, consult with a professional HVAC technician to see if it’s time for a replacement. However, if yours is over 20 years old, replace it before it’s too late!

High bills.
Noticing that your electric bills are going through the roof? Many furnaces don’t run as efficiently if they’re many years old. But even if your furnace is fairly new, if you’re spending more and more each month, it might be time to have it looked at by a pro.

Constant repairs.
Like many other large pieces of equipment, it becomes difficult to replace just one part. If you’re spending a few hundred dollars a month for repairs, this might be a clear indication that replacing old parts with new ones just isn’t doing your furnace justice anymore. In this case, you will probably save more money by replacing it all together.

Strange noises.
From rattling to banging noises, if your furnace is making strange and unusual sounds, chances are your furnace could be giving out. Don’t wait too long after the first signs of these noises – replace is as soon as possible before more serious damage occurs.

Secrets to Cutting Energy Costs

Friday, January 8th, 2016

This weekend is National Cut your Energy Costs Day! Looking to reduce your energy bill this winter without sacrificing comfort or convenience? The solution is simple!

save money

Load Your Washer Smartly – From the laundry machine to the dishwasher, there are many home appliances that can waste you money if you’re not efficient. To make the most of each cycle, fill the laundry machine with a large load each time and place all utensils where they’re designed to go. This way, you get the most of your cycle without needing to waste water scraping off extra residue.

Check Vents – It might sound silly, but sometimes homeowners can forget to open their vents, which prevents heat from circulating throughout your home. They might even be just slightly closed – be sure they’re completely open so that you’re not wasting heat.

Shut Off Electronics – Even if you set all your appliances to sleep mode, you can still drain energy, so make sure you shut off appliances and other electronic devices when you’re not using them. To make life a little easier, plug all your electronics into a powerstrip so you can turn everything off with one flick of a switch.

Increase Airflow – Got central heating at home? Unless you have a small living space, it can be tricky to properly heat up your entire home. Remember that hot air rises and that fans can help move the air around. Keeping tips such as these in mind can help you promote better airflow in your home and cut back on large expenses.

Don’t Make These Common Home Heating Mistakes

Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

T-minus two days until Thanksgiving! Don’t let your home get too chilly when guests arrive. Below are a few common mistakes to avoid if you want to increase your home’s comfort levels this holiday season:

Buying the wrong portable heater
Space heaters are convenient, but you must choose the right type. There are two types of space heaters: convection and radiant ones. Convection heaters take more time to heat up, but are more capable of heating your home than radiant heaters.

Neglecting drafts
Drafts that creep into your home can decrease your home’s temperature and push warm air out. Overtime, this can cost you lots of extra cash. So avoid an uncomfortable Thanksgiving holiday by going around the home and sealing up all those air leaks you might have – your guests will thank you!

Keeping the curtains closed
The more natural sunlight you let into your home, the more you will be able to heat up your home without the use of your central heating system. So on those sunny days, don’t make the mistake of drawing the shades. Instead, leave them open and only keep them closed at night to keep drafts out.

Setting the temperature too high
Did you know that raising your heat too high can overwork your boiler? When you overwork your boiler, you might cause damage, which we all know means costly repairs. On this Thanksgiving holiday, give your heat a little rest! Since you’ll be working a lot in the kitchen, you can let your stove top and oven do the work (and save money on energy bills).

Need a heating repair before the big holiday? If so, then contact Leslie Heating and Cooling! Our technicians are professionally trained and are ready to help you maximize your home’s comfort! Give us a call at (630) 621-9419 or visit our website to learn more about our heating services.

It’s tough to go through a cold winter and not experience at least one heating problem in the home. If you’re a homeowner, then you know how important it is to have a local HVAC professional you can count on day and night! Whether you have a handyman in the house or not, having a heating and cooling company you can turn to is essential.

“I must say that I am very impressed with how responsive you have been most recently and then of course, Jim and Jennifer through the past year/year and a half. I’m so glad I stumbled upon the name, Leslie Heating. Jim has been a lifesaver when it came to helping us solve our heat issues in the past.”

- Jennifer C.

“Each time my heat goes on, I once again think of Clint taking the time to listen to his neighbor, Kevin, who told him of my story. If it were not for Clint taking an interest in my situation, I would still be in trouble. You were so kind in getting me scheduled so quickly! And then looking into the coverage of warranty, etc… I just don’t know what I would have done without all the effort you all put into my situation, which was unusual, I grant you!”

- Midge R.

It was the middle of the night I had to call Leslie because our heater stopped working. I got through right away and the technician came out within the hour. I didn’t know what to expect being it was 2AM and I never had to call a service company after hours. I must say, I’m impressed! Bravo Leslie Heating. The technician came out to my house, professional, polite, and eager to help me with my problem. He did a great job figuring out what was wrong with my heater and got my approval before doing any work.

Best yet, he offered me a service agreement to get my heater and AC inspected twice a year and since I was now a member, there were no extra charges for my middle of the night call! That’s right, same price as 2 in the afternoon. Thanks Leslie Heating and Cooling for following through with your promises.

Reasons Your Home Isn’t Heating

Wednesday, October 28th, 2015

When your home isn’t heating up, what should you do? Heating and cooling systems can be tricky to work with, but sometimes the solution is simple. So before you pick up the phone and call your HVAC technician, check these three common culprits that prevent your home from feeling as toasty as it should:

Family warming up hands over electric heater

1. Windows are not sealed. Warm air seeps out in the sneakiest of places. Walk around to each window in your home. Sometimes it’s easy to know if they’re not sealed because you’ll feel a draft coming in. If you notice any air leaks, you’ll want to seal up those windows with new caulking. Bonus tip: to check for drafts, hold a lit candle close to your window and see if the flame bends. If it does, then you’ll know where the issue lies.

2. Vents are blocked. Do you have furniture or carpets blocking your air vents? When your couch or bed frame is sitting too close to your vents, it could prevent your home from heating up properly. Not to mention, having anything too close to your vents is a hazard. So if you’re feeling chilly, but the heat is set to “high” then blocked vents might be the problem.

3. Furnace filter is dirty. If your furnace filter isn’t changed regularly, it can get dirty enough to clock the return air flow to the furnace. And as a result, your furnace might not work as efficiently to provide your home with heat, or it could even break down. If you choose to change the air filter yourself, be sure to shut off your furnace first.

Have you tried fixing these issues and find that your home still isn’t heating up? If so, then contact Leslie Heating and Cooling! Our technicians are professionally trained and are ready to help you maximize your home’s comfort for the cooler months! May 1, 2013 Furnace Efficiency Mandate UPDATE!

Saturday, April 6th, 2013

In January we had the honor to work with CAI-Community Associations Institute ( to provide a webinar regarding the May 1, 2013 efficiency mandate.  For those of you that need a refresher, the Department of Energy (DOE) established a rule that as of May 1, 2013 only high efficiency 90+ AFUE condensing gas furnaces could be installed.  This meant double the cost for a new install along with a myriad of other problems for many of our customers.  As you may be aware there was a pending lawsuit and settlement that would delay the mandate that the courts were deciding to accept.

As of April 5, 2013 the courts have accepted the settlement which has caused the May 1, 2013 efficiency mandate for the northern states regarding non-weatherized gas furnaces to be negated.  In other words folks, it’s off, the DOE will not enforce the rules for the efficiency mandate in the northern states which includes Illinois.  Therefore customers and their contractors can install 80% efficiency furnaces without consequence…for now.

To read a complete statement by the DOE:

For more information regarding the settlement:

Stay tuned for continue developments, for the efficiency mandate is not going away, just delayed.

Leslie Heating & Cooling will continue to monitor the activities surrounding this issue and will provide critical updates to our customers.
