Seal air leaks and drafts around windows and door frames. Spending just a little on new caulking can go a long way with your energy bill.

Keep drapes closed during the day to block the sun, then open them at night to expel any lingering indoor heat.

Install heat-reflecting films to your blinds or shades and keep your house even cooler, all while reducing glare.

Avoid using hot appliances, like dryers, ovens and stove tops. Instead, embrace the great outdoors this season by barbecuing more often and hanging your clothes outside to dry.

Run ceiling fans the right way. Set your fans to rotate counterclockwise to make everyone in the room feel an estimated 4 degrees cooler.

Use attic fans to suck hot air out of the top of your house and pull cool air in from outdoors.

Choose cotton T-shirts, dresses, tank tops and bed sheets. Cotton is one of the most breathable and cooling fabrics, so incorporate it into your everyday wear as often as possible.

Maintain your AC units by cleaning and changing the filter regularly. Clogged filters make your unit work harder than it needs to and drive up energy costs.

Attach window awnings above South and West facing windows to cut your home’s solar heat gain by more than 60%.

Program your thermostat a few degrees higher during times when no one is home. It saves you the hassle of always adjusting the thermostat and keeps your AC running efficiently.

Getting Your AC Ready for Summer

Monday, April 18th, 2016

Your air conditioning is one of the most fundamental systems in your home, especially during summer. To avoid a malfunctioning AC when the temperatures outside are at their hottest, here are a few ways to prepare:

programmable thermostat

Change the filter
Changing the filter is essential. By replacing your filter, you keep your air conditioning running smoothly. If you have a forced air system, locate the filter behind the metal panel on the front of the blower unit. Unscrew the pannel and replace. For window units, you should find the filter on the face of the unit behind the metal panel. Should your unit come with a permanent filter, gently remove and clean with some white vinegar and water. Allow it to air dry before putting back into place.

Clean the outdoor unit coils
Over the winter, your outdoor unit becomes susceptible to lots of dust, debris, and mud. Inevitably, all that debris can clog up your unit and prevent it from functioning properly. So disconnect the power and spray the outside unit with a garden hose.

Install a programmable thermostat
Did you know that with programmable thermostats, you can set the your system to automatically adjust the temperature when you leave or before you return home – a convenient way to save energy and know that your home will be comfortable the moment you arrive.

Mistakes You’re Making with Your HVAC System

Monday, October 12th, 2015

When the fall temperatures begin to cool off, you start to rely more and more on your home’s HVAC system to keep you warm and comfortable. But these systems can be tricky if not used and maintained properly. To help you get the most out of our HVAC system this season, here are four mistakes you want to avoid:

Electric heating and air conditioning concept
Turning the thermostat too high. When the temps outside are cool, it’s only natural to want to crank the thermostat high to heat up your home more quickly. But truth is, turning the thermostat on even the highest temperature won’t warm up your space any sooner. They key is to stay patient if you want to save money and keep your HVAC system running well.

Turning it down too low at night. If you’re shivering in the morning, chances are you’re turning your heat down too much at night. Instead of blasting your heat in the morning to make up for low temperatures, keep it at a moderate setting all day and all night (unless you’re not home, of course).

Heating while you’re away. Letting your heat run for hours while you’re not at home can cost you an unneeded expense. It’s a good idea to give your heating system a rest by either shutting it off for a little while or by installing a programmable thermostat.

Keeping the curtains closed. On sunny days, don’t let the sun get away from you – allow as much sunlight in as possible by keeping your curtains wide open, especially those facing the south side of your home. Solar energy is an efficient way to give your HVAC system a rest, which can ultimately help you to lower heating bills.

At Leslie Heating and Cooling, we believe that efficiency and comfort is key to a happy household. That is why we offer programmable thermostats to let you design specific settings and help you save money at home.
