Media filters (or air cleaners) are non–electronic option for whole house air cleaning. They work simply by filtering out impurities, pollutants and particulants from the air as it passes through the same way a strainer lets water pass through without letting solid objects pass. The media filter is installed between a return air plenum and your furnace or air handler, and it cleans the air filtering through your duct system. These filters are much more effective at filter impurities out of the air than stock furnace filters, making them a cost–effective and easy way to maintain higher air quality in your home.

Electronic air cleaners are more complex than media air cleaners. Electronic air cleaners use electrostatic attraction to trap charged particles, effectively removing them from the air inside your home. Electronic air cleaners are divided into two categories, electrostatic precipitators and ion generators.

Electrostatic precipitators contain an ionization section and a collecting plate section that are both powered externally. When particles are drawn into the ionization section, they become electrically charged and are trapped on the collector which has an opposite charge. Ion generators disperse charged ions using a corona discharge or UV light. These ions attach to particles and charge them, causing them to stick to nearby surfaces. These cleaners are less complicated than the electrostatic precipitator models.

High–efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration systems are extremely effective air purification systems. They can filtrate at up to 95% efficiency for particles and bioaerosols as small as .3 microns. True HEPA filters are generally used in industrial or medical settings, not in residential housing. However, filters with a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating between 7 and 13 are nearly as effective as HEPA filters, and filters with a MERV of 14–16 may mistakenly be identified as such. The installation of an actual HEPA filter into a preexisting residential heating and cooling system would likely require a professional to modify the system.

Some air cleaners are not content to merely trap pollutants. UV light technology can be used to destroy pollutants in the air. UV germicidal cleaners use ultraviolet radiation to destroy viruses, bacteria and other allergens in your ductwork. They do not filter pollutants out of the air, though, so they should be used in conjunction with other air purification options.
