5 Steps to Prepping Your Furnace
Picture waking up on the first cold day of winter, you go to switch on the heat but there are a few problems. You forgot to clean and prepare, and now you’re left with a chilly home. Avoid this mistake by taking these 5 steps to prep your furnace:
Step 1: Replace the filter
Each month, your filter should be cleaned or replaced to maximize energy efficiency. To replace, locate the filter, pull it out, and slide the new one into the slot.
Step 2: Clean your vents
It’s probably been awhile since you cleaned your vents. If you turn on the heat before cleaning, you’ll only send dust blowing throughout your home and waste heat. Remove the vent covers with a screwdriver, use the extension hose of your vacuum and remove the dust.
Step 3: Inspect the blower belt
Check for cracks. Turn off the your furnace at the main circuit breaker, remove the steel cover of the air handler, and look for the blower belt. It’s the largest rubber belt you’ll see. If it’s cracked, you’ll need to replace it.
Step 4: Adjust your programmable thermostat
Set the programmable thermostat in your home so that it lowers the temperature while you are asleep or away from home. In doing so, you can save 20 t0 75 percent on your furnace’s operating costs.
Step 5: Clear the area
Keep the area around your furnace clean and debris-free. The more cluttered it is, the more of a hazard you put on your home. The same rules apply for your vents – keep them clear and clean so that you don’t run into a dangerous situation.
