Do You Know the Warning Signs of Poor Air Quality?
The first thing every new parent does is baby proof their house. After covering sharp edges, putting locks on the cabinet, and adding a gate before the stairs, most parents are confident that their house is the epitome of safety. But have you ever stopped to consider what the air quality in your home is like? Far too often, air quality is overlooked in favor of more “immediate dangers.” This weekend take a moment to check your home for these signs of poor air quality.
Mold and mildew
Mold and mildew typically grow in warm, damp areas and are some of the biggest contributors to poor air quality. If you’re on the hunt for mold, start by checking the most common areas, like the sink, tub, tiles, and air conditioning unit.
An unpleasant smell
Just because you can’t see mold, doesn’t mean it’s not there. If you start to notice a damp, unpleasant smell, it may be a sign of mold.
Dust
While a little dust here and there won’t do any harm, large quantities can affect your breathing and health. If you’re noticing dust particles flying around on sunny days, or a layer of dust on the TV screen, you should give your house a deep cleaning with chemical-free cleaning products.
Humidity
Typically, humidity is the predecessor of mold. Throughout the year, try to keep your house between 30 to 50% humidity. If you live in a humid climate, you should be actively tracking your homes humidity levels.
Frequent illness
While this isn’t necessarily something you’ll find in your house, it is something you should be aware of. If you’re noticing that you, or family members, are suddenly getting sick, it could be due to contaminated air.
