How to Prep Your Home for Vacation
Leaving on a jet plane for Spring Break? Before your departure, run through this quick checklist of steps you can take to prepare your home while you’re out of town.
Step 1. Unplug your electrical devices. This means your computers, TVs, kitchen appliances, and tablet chargers. There’s nothing like keeping all of your devices plugged in to unnecessarily boost your electric bill. So be smart and turn off everything before you leave.
Step 2. Clean out the fridge. Toss out food that can go rotten to avoid a horrible stench upon your return back home.
Step 3. Turn off the water supply in your home by finding the main valve. This should help you to avoid a plumbing disaster, such as flooding.
Step 4. Set timers for your lights. Although it might cost you some extra money on your energy bill, it’s a great way to make it not-so-obvious that you’re away from home. Think of it as a security system.
Step 5. Create a list of emergency contacts and instructions for your close neighbors so that they can take care of anything that goes wrong.
Step 6. Turn down the heat about ten degrees. This should help you save money on your utility bill and conserve energy while you’re away.
