How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Fall
Even though the temperatures haven’t dropped just yet, it’s a good idea to be prepared for when they do. By performing a routine HVAC maintenance, you can catch little problems early on so that you don’t run into bigger problems when you really need the heat at home. Before you get started, here are a few tips to consider:
Replace the filter. If you haven’t changed the filter yet, now is the time to do so! Better yet, try the new high-efficiency pleated filters that can grab even the tiniest particles. It’s also a good reminder to check on the filter every month. And if it looks dirty, it’s best to go ahead and change it.
Clear the vents. Before turning the heat on, you should clear your vents of dust and debris. Because cranking the heat without cleaning them can cause dust, allergens, and bacteria to blow around, causing potential health issues. The best way to clean your vents is to vacuum using the hose.
Check on your alarms and detectors. The fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector in your home are essential devices that keep you safe. So make sure you inspect that they’re working properly and replace the battery if needed. Going through the fall and winter months without doing so can be dangerous and potentially life threatening, so make it a must-do.
Remove debris outside. It’s easy for pollen, leaves, twigs, and other forms of debris to get caught in or around your HVAC system, so it’s a good idea to clear it off. Check the tops and sides of your AC unit and heat pump outside – if there are no obstructions then you’re good to go!
