Most Effective Way to Clean Vent Mold

Most Effective Way to Clean Vent Mold

Have you recently examined the vents in your home? Although they may look clean on the surface, harmful substances such as mold can be building up on the opposite end. If you’re unsure about mold buildup or know about its presence, then here is a helpful way to remove it from your vents:

Supplies

Before you start cleaning that moldy vent, you’ll need to acquire these supplies first:

  • 1 dust mask

  • 1 screwdriver

  • Water

  • Laundry Detergent

  • 1 large bucket

  • Paper towels

Remove the Vent

After you obtain your supplies, it’s time to start the cleaning process! Start by locating the vent in your home and remove the screws with a screwdriver. Once that’s complete, take the mold-covered vent and bring it into your kitchen. From there, you’ll begin the actual cleaning process.

The Cleaning

Once you bring the vent to your kitchen, it’s time to fill the large bucket with water and a standard amount of laundry detergent. After the two ingredients form a mixture, it’s then time to submerge the vent completely within the bucket for approximately fifteen minutes. Leaving the entire vent submerged for this duration will completely clean and sanitize any area of mold buildup.

The Drying

After approximately fifteen minutes have passed, it’s time to take the vent out of the soapy mixture and let it air-dry completely. When you let your vent air-dry, it will effectively make every square inch, crease and corner of the vent dry — leaving little room for mold regrowth. If you notice some damp spots after letting the vent air-dry, then take a few paper towels and dry them by hand.

Install

Soon after the drying process has completed, it’s time to reinstall the vent. Similar to removing it from the wall, place the vent back in the appropriate spot and use a screwdriver to secure it to the wall. Once this final step is complete, your vent will be good as new and won’t spread harmful substances through the air again.
