Simple Ways to Clean Your AC Before You Pack It Away
Once the leaves begin to drop off the trees, so will the temperature. That’s right — autumn is just around the corner, and you won’t be using your AC unit too often when those fall breezes are present. Before dismantling your unit and storing it away, it’s important you clean it first with these simple tips:
Clean the Filter
One of the simplest ways to prepare your AC unit for storage is to clean the filter. Nine out of ten times, homeowners will pack away their cooling unit without giving it a proper wash first. Before you stuff it in the back of your garage, take a look at the filter. Sometimes if there’s serious build up, the unit will then have some issues when spring arrives. The simplest cleaning method is to gently spray the kitchen nozzle through the filter panels with luke-warm water. Once this step is complete, let the filter air-dry and then place back in the unit — your AC will be good as new when it’s time to bring it back out for spring!
Clean the Coils
Another important part to clean before you pack-up your AC are the coils. Just like the filter, if the external coils are caked in debris, then your AC won’t function properly when you reinstall it. To clean the coils first locate the electrical disconnect and turn it off. Once that step is complete, spray any debris off the coils with a garden hose. Next, take a store-bought coil cleaner and spray it upon the coils — letting it sit there for a good 10-15 minutes. Once the time is up, it’s time to hose off the unit’s coils and then your AC unit will be ready for storage!
