The Benefits of an HVAC Cleaning
Floors, windows, countertops, and bedding – odds are, this is your go-to spring cleaning list. And while we certainly agree with everything on it, we think you should be adding one very important thing to that list – your HVAC unit. Despite being the thing that keeps your home’s air quality in check and maintains a comfortable temperature, many people overlook their system when it comes to regular home maintenance. Ensure your unit runs at its peak performance this season by giving it a good cleaning.
What to Do:
-
Change the filter. Maintain your home’s air quality by cleaning your filters every few months. Some units let you just pop out the filter, clean it, and put it back in; while other disposable filters will need to be thrown out and replaced each time.
-
Clean the drainage hole. Even if your air conditioner was turned off all winter, the drainage hole still needs to be cleaned before it’s turned on again.
-
Dust your vent fans. Use some soapy water and a toothbrush to give your kitchen and bathroom fans a deep clean. It may be a little tedious, but your sinuses will thank you when you turn on the fan and don’t see any dust flying around.
-
Call your serviceman. It’s always a good idea to call your technician before the start of the season. Regular maintenance will keep your unit in better shape and likely prevent any big problems that could pop-up in the future.
The Benefits:
Better indoor air quality. Especially in the spring, pet dander, dust, and pollen can get trapped in your unit and circulate throughout your house. The cleaner your system is, the cleaner your air will be.
Energy savings. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted because of dirty coils. When air can’t easily pass through a coil, the entire system works harder to force the air through.
Unit lifespan. Just like a car, the better you maintain your HVAC unit now, the longer it will last. Regular cleanings and maintenance will keep your system running strong for years.
